Off Hand flourishing was an art done by calligraphy artistes, with the sole intent of showing off their skills. It is an art that is seldom used today, and in some esoteric circles even frowned upon. This drawing was done originally by hand with a dip pen and black ink. What I have done: is redo the image with a drawing tablet and digital pen, and the use of Abobe Illustrator. So the original is a layered vector file.These images would look great on a set of mugs or dinner plates.

But the canvas came with a promotional pack of oil tubes at a fantastic mark down price. Too good to be missed. Was embarrassed to show a painting that was not 100% mine so it has been in the garage since 2008.

Scapbook prototype

Found this old painting in the garage, and it reminded me of what certain people are like. A client approached me and wanted a very large canvas painted with photos of her family stuck all over the canvas. Called Scrap booking. This was one of many small prototypes that I thought fitted her description, but she never came to have a look at the prototypes. This painting is 20X25cm, and was painted with artist quality paints, on a piece of masonite covered with canvas.

Mrs Blue Hair

The paint that is left over after the painting is finished - what do you use it for. You can not get it back into the tube, and if not used for a similar painting with the same colours, it is going to get hard. The solution; grab a paint brush and begin to draw/paint something, anything. Some of the best results that I have got have been from left over paint. Some times when I set a gaol of painting something wonderful, the results are no where near those that I was aiming for. But without any tension and stress, fantastic results can be achieved.The paintings are more loose and relaxed. try it and see what happens!

This is a painting that was intended as a study of ligh and shadows with no attention to colour, but as I started to work on it, it reminded me of some of the picture of Picasso's blue period. Not that I would liken my painting to his, as he was truly a great master of the brush.

The original image that I saw was a publicity photo and it was only in black and white, or should I say tones of grey. It is not done in the typical style of the gold and silver leaf, but I did enjoy doing it. Hope you like and please leave a comment.

Bony Hip

This is one of my new creations called Bony Hip. It is a small picture, a mere 18 x 21cm, but what made it enjoyable to do, was that it was done onto a puzzle. I will be do some more of this type of drawing for a while.

Great News – I have sold two of my gold leaf paintings in Macau. But the best part of this news, is that it was in the aid of setting up the first rehabilitation centre for woman. Up until now, help was given only to men that had an addition problem and the woman were given very little or no help at all.
But things have changed – various government bodies, companies and individuals have stepped up to do there part. So on the 18 October 2010 the first centre for woman was opened up.
Galeria 57, played a huge role in the raising of funds for the organization. The ARTM (Associação de Reabilitação de Toxicodependentes de Macau) organization has been in operation for 10 years. Until now they were working with men in the area of rehabilitation and prevention of drug abuse.
It felt good to know that I have contributed in some way to this organization – ARTM – and hope that in the future I will be able to help again. Should anyone want to know more about the ARTM here is a link - www.artm.org.mo

The Results of the IPL exhibition

Hi Everyone – it has been a really long time since I have written anything on my blog, and since I’m laid up with the flu, it was a good time to put fingers to the keyboard.
First of all I would like to tell you about the exhibition that I had I had last year at the IPl. That anachronism stands for Instituto de Politécnico de Leiria. In other words it is an technicon
The staff there were absolutely fantastic – especially Elisa Bento. She ran more than the extra mile and she is a credit to the institute. They do not know her value.
All the publicity was done well before the time and they had no problems with the fact that I wanted to design the catalogue as well as the invitations. Having just finished a course on Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator.
The opening night was a great success – all my family as well as friends arrived. One of the best things about the event was that a friend of mine – Sandy allowed her daughter to play the harp at the inauguration. She played a piece that was fantastic and the crowd loved it. At least they were quiet during that time to hear the music . It was no easy thing to gat a harp to the inauguration. That instrument is really beautiful as heavy and even more expensive. It was a huge relief to deliver the harp back to it’s home. The worry and concern on their faces (Marta and her family) was very evident. I’m really appreciative of their support and value their friendship.
I also had another friend of mine and great art – Abilio Febre. He was invited to the event to say a few words on my behalf, and at short notice he did not hesitate to step forward. I wish him everything of the best in his artistic career and hope that his work (sculpture) bring him ore and more happiness. Then, I also had a friend of mine (Inês Bernardinho) that has a wineyard. She supplied the wine and the explanations as to the making if it. The name of the farm is “Quinta da Sapeira” and is situated in the centre of Portugal in a area called Azoia. Inês does not cater for large quantities and has some clients in Northern Europe that appreciate roses and white wines. All the varieties of the farm was on display and the public could select the wine they wanted to taste.
I had to give a speck in Portuguese which was really hard for me. In English I would have been a walk in the park
The show went off with any problems and I received a lot of good reviews. Look forward to doing it again.

IPL Exhibition

I have an exhibition that is running at the moment at the IPL which stands for the “Instituto de Politécnico de Leiria”. It is a university in the centre of Portugal in the town of Leiria. The exhibition is in the library named after the great literate in Portugal, “José Saramago”, and what an appropriate place for a gallery. It has natural light from large windows that surround the library up to the 1st floor.
The exhibition will run from the 17 September to the 13 October 2010, and I have 17 painting hanging in the gallery. This painting of a woman in the wind is one of the pictures in the exhibition. The Gallery/library is open until 23h30 weekdays and is open on Saturday morning until 1pm.
The staff at the library will put many a gallery to shame. They were incredibly proactive in promoting the event. Special thanks go to Elisa Bento who did the university and me proud.
Without a doubt special thanks go to my family who have always been supportive of my enthusiasm for doing art.
An inauguration is of no user if there is no alcohol, so my dear friend Inês Bernardino supplied the wine from her personal wine farm – Quinta da Sapeira – and what fine wine does she have!! She has won several awards in Europe and has an extensive client base in the north of Europe. If anyone wants to know more I will gladly help with the information.
The other item that made the event so memorable was that anther friend of mine (life is rich when one has so many good friends) played a classical harp during the event. During the solo event she played so well that the hairs on my arm stood up, and at the end, everyone applauded her. I wish her everything of the best in her studies and hope that she does ever so well.
I more than pleased with the number of people that were at the inauguration, and am deeply indebted to the support and encouragement.

The next art show or Exhibition will be held at a university in Leiria call IPL, Right next to the new and improved Leiria Shopping. The date of the inauguration is the 17 September 2010 and the show runs until 8 October. Marta will be playing a harp and our good friend Inês will be presenting her wines from Quinta da Sepeira. So all are invited to a feast for the eyes, the ears as well as the tongue.

The Blue Yonder

This is one of the very few paintings that colour was used.
The positive section was done with silver leaf, but the background was done with gold leaf.

The title of the picture is "The Blue Yonder". It reminds me of the time when I used to hike though the mountains of South Africa. Standing on top of a mountain and looking out over the scene below. The feeling of being on top of the world is enough to make one feel like disrobing and chilling out.

Well this is what this is about. This chap has been waiting at the bar for his date but she has not arrived.
Waiting again was painted with gold ans silver leaf. The person himself was done in silver and the back groung was done with gold leaf.
Size is 117*74,5 and was done in 2003

Backlight

This is one of my favourites, but most people do not see what it is right from the beginning. It is a back of a woman with a strong light from the right side causing deep shadows.
The size of the painting is 100*81cm and the title is "Backlight"

Bed Feet

This is very different o all my other paintings, because the perspective is not at two paints but in the centre.
The title is "Bed Feet" because they were the feet of my wife while lying on the bed, and her cabinet next to her.
The size of this is 116*92cm, and naturally was done with gold and silver leaf, placed on canvas.

This painting is square, 100*100cm.
This was the result of a day on the beach and could not get round to draw the face, but I thought that the way the one leg was laid over the other was interesting.

Anerexia

This was a result of seeing a model in a fashion magazine, I thought she looked positively awful being so thin, but intriguing at the same time. So It was put to canvas, the size being 100*81cm.
Most people do not like the image, so I think my feeling have been interpreted correctly.

The frame is also part of the painting.

This painting is a little different to most of the other I have done, because the farme itself has been made part of the painting. Gold and silver leaf have been used again and the size is 78*62,5cm. This painting was done in 2003.

Detached

This I also think is one of my better paintings. the title says it all - "Detached". Well at least I think it does. For those that do not understand the title I will explain: Have you ever been in a crowded room and feel that you are alone. This is what this painting is about. This person is sitting in a room and very far away there is a group of people standing and talking, but in reality they are vdery much closer to him/her. This painting was also done on gold leaf and is 100*81cm

The Navel

This was done because I like the contrast between light and shade. The face in particular was a real challenge because it had a shadow that could make the nose look completely wrong. But I was happy with the results eventually.

This has been presented to a wine label board and if they accept it it could be used on a very good Portuguese wine. So here´s hoping.
